Angelo and Romana Caputo Foundation Toy Drive

With the holidays coming up, we take a moment to reflect on all of our blessings and think of what we can do to give back.

Earlier this year, we lost our founder, Angelo Caputo. Anyone who has known Angelo and Romana Caputo can attest to the fact that they were the most generous people. In an effort to honor their name, we have created the Angelo and Romana Caputo Foundation. Angelo and Romana’s true pride and passion was family. They loved their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Nothing made them happier than seeing their family together. In addition, they had a unique ability to make people feel at home. Whether staying for a week or an hour, you were made to feel like part of the family and a treasured guest as soon as you walked into the Caputo household.

With this in mind, we have partnered with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland & Northwest Indiana (RMHC-CNI) who exists so families with hospitalized children can get better together.Their goal of keeping families together during an incredibly difficult and unimaginable time is on brand for the Caputo Family. No family should have to be separated from their children, especially in a time of crisis. Ronald McDonald House allows parents who are far from home to stay close to their hospitalized child and benefit from the comforts of home without incurring hotel and food costs.

We are confident that our missions align and are inspired by the hard work of all those involved in the RMHC-CNI! To help support the Ronald McDonald House we’ve got a few different programs in-store.

Toy Drive

One way to get involved is by donating to our holiday toy drive! Every kid that enters the house starts by going to the toy room and picking out a brand new toy! We will be collecting toys in each of our locations and dropping them off to the local chapters. You can get involved by dropping off new, unwrapped toys or gift cards! We will have the toy drive run through the end of the year!

Pop Tab Program

Sometimes the little things can make a big difference! Another way to get involved is to collect your pop tabs and donate them! These pop tabs are the aluminum tabs you pull open soda, soups, and other cans with! Collect them in your house and drop them off at our stores. Look for the little RMHC-CNI or give them to the service desk. These tabs will be collected, given back to Ronald McDonald House, and where it is donated for scrap metal!

We look forward to our continued partnership in support of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland & Northwest Indiana. Keep an eye out for more opportunities to get involved!

“Honorary Angelo Caputo Way” Street Naming

On October 14th, the northwest corner of Grand and Harlem Avenues became known as “Honorary Angelo Caputo Way” after a motion passed by the Village of Elmwood Park President, Angelo “Skip” Saviano and the Village Board of Trustees at the September Board Meeting.

This resolution comes just a few months after the peaceful passing of Angelo Caputo– who returned home to Heaven to reunite with his beloved wife, Romana Caputo, on June 16.

In 1958 in Elmwood Park, IL, an Italian emigrant looking to live out the American Dream opened what would later become Angelo Caputo’s Fresh Markets.

A true legend and pioneer in the industry, Angelo Caputo created opportunities for so many. He was and will always be a guiding force and inspiration for his family who strives everyday to keep his incredible legacy alive and honor his name with the continued operation and growth of Angelo Caputo’s Fresh Markets. The values Angelo instilled in his family and the example he set of hard work, dedication, sacrifice, and customer service are guiding principles of the company.

This resolution is an incredible honor and a beautiful tribute to the astonishing man who had nothing but respect and gratitude for the Village of Elmwood Park, the place where his dream came to life.

Item of the Week– Margherita Pizza

Italian Heritage Month continues and we’re on week 3!

One of the top foods in Italy is pizza! There is nothing like the smell, taste, or look of a pizza fresh out of the oven. The ingredients on the pizza make all the difference, the fresher the ingredients, the better the pizza! One type of pizza that embraces some of the freshest ingredients that is also our item of the week is a margherita pizza!

This classic thin-crust pizza originated in Naples, Italy, and it honors the Italian flag: Red from imported San Marzano tomatoes, green from fresh basil and white from gooey rounds of fresh mozzarella.

This simple pizza recipe is a must-have during National Italian Heritage month and it is only available for a limited time only! This week only, we will be offering a La Bella Romana margherita pizza for you to try out and post about for your chance to win a Caputo’s gift card!

At Caputo’s we make our own, homemade arancini in our commissary everyday. We offer 2 different versions.

Our meat arancini are stuffed with our homemade meat ragu and peas. Our second version is stuffed with spinach.

Best Fall Produce

Fall has officially begun! We can expect brisker days, Sundays spent watching football, fun activities, and some great produce!

Fall brings about some of the freshest seasonal produce!

Here are 4 of the best fall fruits and veggies, and some ideas of what to do with them!

1. Brussel Sprouts

From the cabbage family, brussel sprouts are a great fall veggie packed with health benefits!

It is a great source of vitamin k which is essential for blood clotting and bone health. They are high in fiber which is great for your digestive and gut health.v They are a good source of omega 3’s (thanks to the alpha-linoleic acids which convert to omega 3’s) which can help with cholesterol and blood pressure.

Brussel Sprouts have a mild flavor that really adapts to what you cook it with! You can roast, steam, sautee… uit’s up to you!

A  great way to cook them that really enhances the flavor and makes for a great side dish? Bacon Braised Brussel Sprouts

2. Apples

Apple picking is a classic fall activity. Fall is great for a juicy, crisp apple and we bring in a variety of locally grown apples throughout the fall season! These are great for cooking, baking, or even eating by themselves for a snack!

There’s so much you can do with them, but using apples for making a sweet dessert is one of our favorites! Get the very best of fall with this Cider Glazed Apple Bundt Cake

3. Pears

Fall is a great time to enjoy pears. Bartlett, anjou, bosc, comice… so many to choose from! They are all uniquely delicious and have great benefits like they are high in fiber, can boost your immune system, lower cholesterol and more!

You can incorporate pears in so many dishes. They are great to throw in a salad,  add to a side dish, or even use on your pizza! Try this Pear, Goat Cheese, and Pistachio Pizza for your next pizza night!

4. Pumpkins

The iconic fall vegetable… pumpkins! Not only are pumpkins fun to take pictures with or spend the night carving, they are also delicious to eat! That beautiful orange color of pumpkins isn’t just to make them pretty, the orange color comes from the high amount of beta-carotene. This then converts to vitamin A which makes it great for your eye health! Beta-carotene is also great for your immune system, and can help with skin protecting. These are just a few perks of incorporating pumpkins in your fall diet.

When you think of pumpkin, you can’t help but think of pumpkin desserts! The natural sweetness makes pumpkin puree a main ingredient in many fall sweets. Why not try to use it as a side though? Try these Pumpkin dinner rolls! These pair perfectly with butter and a little cranberry sauce or enjoy it on the sweeter side with butter and a little cinnamon sugar.
